
How to Measure Audience Response: A Comparison of Seven Methods
There are seven established ways to measure how people respond to an experience: neurologic Value Measurement, EEG, fMRI, electrodermal activity, eye tracking, facial coding, and implicit association testing. They differ less in what they can detect than in where they can be used and whether the result predicts what someone does next. Lab methods buy precision under controlled conditions. Wearable methods buy scale in real environments. This page compares all seven on the dimensions that decide which one fits a given study.

What each method is best at
fMRI
The most predictive method available. In a controlled benchmark against real advertising elasticities it was the only one that added value over a standard survey. Best when the question is where in the brain something happens and budget and access are not constraints.
EEG
Millisecond timing of cortical activity, and its inter-subject correlation metric has genuinely predicted Nielsen ratings and social volume. Best in a lab with seated, controlled viewing.
Eye tracking
Unmatched for visibility and search order: what was seen, in what order, and what was missed. It answers a necessary condition, and it pairs well with a measure that carries evaluative sign.
EDA
A clean, purely sympathetic arousal signal with no parasympathetic contribution. Best when the research question is genuinely about arousal alone.
Facial coding
Affordable, non-invasive, needs only a camera. Best where the display of expression is itself the object of study.
IRT / IAT
Affordable, non-invasive, at-home, and can surface associations people would not report. Best for brand association work.
Value Measurement
The only method here that runs on hardware people already own, in the room where the experience happens, and reports a score built to predict what someone does next.

Value Measurement
Why most methods fail to predict behavior
In 2015, researchers compared traditional self-report, implicit measures, eye tracking, biometrics, EEG, and fMRI against actual advertising elasticities drawn from market data. Controlling for traditional survey measures, only their fMRI results predicted outcomes. EEG added nothing (p = .399). Eye tracking made the model worse. Skin conductance was non-significant (p = .949).
Value Measurement was not among the methods tested. Its own validation is separate — including an independent validation and reliability study of live, structured experiences published in the Journal of Leisure Research by Melton, Hodge, Densley and Sturdivant, none of whom are affiliated with Immersion.
